Little Miss Shirley Temple

This snapshot was taken in Newport Beach as Little Shirley Temple enjoyed a summer at the beach. My sister-in-law is pictured in the background in the sailor hat. This would have been a few months before the December 1934 release of Shirley's movie Bright Eyes and the debut of her signature song On the Good Ship Lollipop .  Just click on the link to see and hear  Little Shirley sing. Such sweet innocence.

  1. very neat! I can't think of any 'celebrity' photos I have with a personal touch like this. I'm not done going through my stuff in the attic yet though, lol.

When I googled Shirley Temple, I found out that she was the first 'major' celebrity to admit to having had breast cancer, in 1973. She was a great little girl, and a great woman, that is still going strong at 82 apparently, although she stays out of the news. She has probably helped thousands, if not millions, of women stay alive because of her courage in coming forward and not hiding it, as if it was anything that needed to be secret. But before the '70s there were so many things that people tended to be ashamed of, for no reason at all seen in today's light.

  2. In the 70's I was in my upper teens. In my family, we were raised to believe it's most impolite to talk about any health issues you might be experiencing. Those were considered very personal. I used to die a thousand deaths if anyone made a "fart" joke (I'm still uncomfortable even typing the word! LOL I also assumed most everyone was raised with this same belief. If so, it would have been very brave of Shirley Temple Black to come forward and talk about having breast (gasp) cancer. On a side note, wasn't she also American Ambassador to the UN or something for years? (I should know this).

I'm curious, were any of you raised to believe it was impolite to discuss your health?

  3. Here is the Wiki link that details her public service years http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirley_Temple

Well, my family was very private about most things health, money etc. This and That With Artichoke Annie would be greatly frowned upon. Though I can't help thinking that my mother would have loved computers and the internet, but I could be wrong, she considered the Census Long Form an invasion of her privacy. lol

    Welcome back Katie
