The same with movies, real or animated, that feature dogs such as 101 Dalmatians, Beethoven or even a TV show like Frasier which featured Eddie the Jack Russell terrier.
In this marvelous copy-cat, or maybe in this case 'copy-dog' society we live in people see these animals and rush to taste a bit of life's fame and get themselves a puppy just like Paris.
This act of emulation causes two actions which ends up being detrimental to many helpless dogs. First, breeders get over-whelmed with the supply and demand conundrum.
When Disney's 101 Dalmatians hit the big screen, these black and white spotted dogs couldn't be bred fast enough to meet the demand, in many cases this results in careless inbreeding that is a detriment to the breed as a whole.
The second sad but true result is that throngs of 'copy-doggers' grow tired of schlepping these little dogs about - you see they don't come with their own hoard of paparazzi, so it's just you, your faux Gucci and the sweet little dog. No flash, no cash.
A great number of these dogs end up unwanted and in shelters, waiting with hope that someone will come along and love them just for who they are.
This is a subject I am very passionate about! It is heart breaking...
ReplyDeletePuppy mills should be shut down...they really should! If you want a good (and I mean GOOD) cry...search for information on them...so so so sad!
Thanks for bringing this to light Annie...
