The fifty-two passengers that have been stranded in the ice in Antarctica since Christmas were airlifted out today via Chinese helicopter. Full story here in the New York Times. They were flown to a nearby Chinese ice breaker, the Snow Dragon, that was in the area. The group still won't make landfall for a couple of weeks when the ship will reach Tasmania.
The 22-member crew of the stranded Russian research ship remains behind and will wait until the ice frees up its hold on the ship. Through this whole event there was a part of me that wished I had been there. The group of passengers were such a jovial lot through this experience, really making the best of a bad situation.
I'm pretty good at that as well, as long as danger is minimal, food is available and there is booze in abundance.
