Glyphosate
Chemical Compound
Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide used to kill weeds, especially annual broadleaf weeds and grasses known to compete with commercial crops grown around the globe. Wikipedia
There is a rather lengthly article in the New York Times today entitled Misgivings About How A Weed Killer Affects the Soil. I think it will be a cold day in hell when the industries, both the farming and chemical, will ever acknowledge that chemical weapons used on crops can be bad for the human animal.
For certain there was one truth spoken when talking about the use of Roundup:
“Local agronomists are starting to say we have to get away from Roundup,” Mr. Vermeer said. “But they’re going to have to show me that conventional genetics can produce the same income.”
For just a second there I flashed on the baseball industry and could almost hear Casey At the Bat being quoted as saying: "Giving up steroid use? You're going to have to show me that non-use of steroids can produce the same number of home runs."
The use of chemical weapons on our food sources needs to be looked out through long range lenses. Just focusing on the short term benefits of a more profitable crop doesn't address all the issues. And what Farmer A does twenty miles down the road will have an affect on Farmer B crop as well.
We have more children bouncing off the walls with ADD, cases of Autism are rising and then there is the possible link of Glyphosate to breast cancer. Monsanto is not going to come out and tell you this they make Roundup. Farmers that use the product won't tell you because it would affect their profit line.
It makes perfect sense to me that what you put into your body so shall you reap. So much of our food is genetically modified. Some of those modifications can stay in our bodies and become part of our make up that in turn gets passed on to another generation.
The quick fix whether it is for crop performance or batting performance needs to be looked at very carefully. Food is the fuel our bodies use to sustain and grow itself. It can be a very good thing or it can be a very harmful thing and crop profit shouldn't be the major reason in making the correct decision.
I love the steroid comparison. Perfect!
