Hoover Dam Bypass

Here are some photos taken today of the new Hoover Dam Bypass, the bridge just opened a couple of weeks ago. When I get back home I will go through and crop some of the other photos I took and post them later.

These photos are all taken from down below the new bridge on the level of the of the dam entrance. From below the structure is quite spectacular. It really is amazing the structures man can make. For more information on the Hoover Dam bypass you can click here.

In 1956 I toured Hoover Dam it was quite a sight to see. Today we were more interested in just seeing the new bridge over the dam. From the bridge itself you can't see much due to the high concrete sides along the road. That was fine with me as I do much better looking up than looking down.

You are able to pull off and park on top and actually walk out on the bridge. We didn't even need to bring it to a vote, no one it seems really wanted to walk out on the bridge.

But from below it was a sight to behold. I hope some of the quick-pics I took as we drove by the dam itself will crop nicely and give you an idea of the art deco style facade. But these will have to wait until I get home so I can work on them.

The weather as you can see is quite nice this time of year. Not hot and a light sweater is all that is needed while roaming about outside. I think we were getting a little stir crazy in the casino, what with all the bells and blinking lights. I really don't know how people can spend days sitting at those slot machines.

My niece's daughter, who lives just outside of Vegas, was our tour guide and did the driving while the rest of us gawked in wonder,

Here is the Wikepedia link for Hoover Dam for more information on the construction of the dam which was  dedicated 1935.

  1. wow! I can't imagine designing on such a large scale. I remember the first time i saw a newspaper cover I designed, or the first book I designed, it was really a great feeling. i can't even imagine looking at something so huge and so long-lasting as that bridge, or a skyscraper. thanks for the pix!

oh, did you drive on the Hoover Dam? from the photos I've seen there is a pretty narrow roadway on it. Or maybe it's just for walking? i have no idea, lol. My trips across country never got me near it.
