In an NRC issued report #11-213 on November 16, 2011, Chairman Jaczko gave the agency a pat on the back.
The agency reported that it had met all six of the performance areas with regard to safety measures. It missed the "perfect" mark in security however when it gave itself a four out of five mark, stating "there was one unrecovered loss or theft of a risk-significant radioactive source (a stolen radiography camera), which exceeded the target of zero".
“I am proud of the performance of NRC employees in achieving the agency’s safety and security goals while continuing to prudently manage the resources entrusted to us by the American people,” said Chairman Gregory B. Jaczko.
Editorial Comment: Until the issue of permanent long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel is resolved I will continue to feel the agency falls short of its goals. Granted the DOE has the responsibility of spent nuclear fuel, but the NRC's goals should include this issue if indeed the safety of the American people is a trust they take seriously.
